While you are in the game’s main hub, the offices, you are given small tasks from your boss and colleagues and must try to accomplish them while dungeon diving. You are tasked with descending into them, defeating their bosses, earning loot and emerging victorious. Under your company, there are three randomly generated dungeons that are all previously failed tech start-up companies. There is nothing wrong with being a bit weird. The whole thing is a bit uncanny but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I am not sure why this setting was chosen for a game of this ilk and I am not sure it even works too well but I did, at times, enjoy it. Smartphone apps, cryptocurrencies, electronic smart speakers, and massive company changes all feed into a satirical story that frames this roguelike dungeon crawler. There is a lot in Going Under that is immediately recognizable. Something I have dreamt of doing at work many times, weirdly. What kind of company is this? This is definitely not what I signed up for and before I could even blink, I was picking up a keyboard and belting zombies with it in the underbelly of the company I work for. In Going Under you play as Jackie, a plucky intern who is striving to work her way up the company ladder, but before you have even settled in you are given a massive shock as it turns out you need to go and slay some beasts.

Or, perhaps, it’s using the limited running and jumping slightly better than other players to get a win in Fall Guys. This might be understanding how the propulsion of your car lets you take to the air and hit a perfect shot in Rocket League. Whether you rise through the league tables, or just improve compared to your family, the satisfaction or getting to grips with something so monumentally challenging is really satisfying. Rather than offering assistance, these games leave you to it.

Rather than relying on the stats of your character or player, you have to execute the moves yourself with timing proficiency and instinct. Whereas many games simplify getting around, these games make the complexity and depth of their movement systems part of the joy of playing them. There are a small group of games that hone this challenge down to the mechanics of moving around the environment. It takes time to understand their systems, mechanics, objectives and worlds. When someone plays a game too much it’s easy to think they are taking an easy route to something entertaining, like junk food. Games offer us challenges on many levels.
